Day 12 of the Military Coup
Summary of Events
Today is Day 12 of an internet shutdown that began on October 25, shortly after the takeover of General Abdelfattah Al-Burhan through a military coup.
This internet shutdown has hindered the flow of information, both within Sudan and to the outside world. As a result, today has been another slow day, with very little information coming out of Khartoum, and even less from outside the capital. This heightens concerns amidst continued violence and mass arrest campaigns carried out by the military across the country.
As mediation continues, rumors are still circulating about Burhan's selections for the possible new transitional government cabinet. As of yet, there is still no confirmed news of an agreement being reached between political prisoner PM Hamdok and illegal coup leader General Burhan.
Today, the UN Human Rights Council convened in an emergency meeting on Sudan, in which they condemned the military coup and called for the release of detainees and ‘the return to a civilian-led transitional government’.
Worth noting: Russia, China and Venezuela "dissociated themselves from the initiative". (UN News)
The Human Rights Council meeting comes the morning after three public figures - Taha Osman Ishaaq, Sharif Mohamed Osman and Hamza Farouq - were arrested by the military outside the office of UN Special Representative to Sudan Volker Perthes, following a meeting held with him.
Special Representative Perthes released statement stating that he "deplored and condemned" the action.
The Central Committee of Sudan Doctors released its latest statistics report, including total number of civilians killed (14) and injured (181) since October 25, with many of those injured reported to be in critical condition and some sustaining permanent disability. As mentioned in the CCSD’s report, the internet and telecommunications shutdown has made it particularly difficult to collect accurate information, so these numbers are likely to increase.
In the meantime, resistance activities continue as per the schedule set by resistance committees. Today, Friday sermons at mosques addressed the current situation and how the people can continue peaceful resistance. Tomorrow is "barricade night", when citizens are urged to barricade roads in their neighborhoods. Nationwide disobedience days are also planned for next week across various professional fields and industries.
