Day 19 of the Military Coup

Summary of Events

  • It is Day 19 of #SudanBlackout: a pathetic (albeit destructive) attempt by the military to silence the people of Sudan as they express overwhelming rejection of the coup and military rule. The people, however, will not be silenced.

  • The United Resistance Committees of Khartoum State released a statement following their invitation to a meeting with the SRSG for Sudan, which they declined and sent the statement letter instead. The letter reiterated the resistance committees’ stance regarding the current situation, including that:

    • This is a coup

    • Prosecution of coup orchestrators (Burhan, Himedti, heads of intelligence) is a must

    • Sudan wants a completely civilian government, and to ban the military from participation in the political sphere

    • No negotiation, no compromise, no partnership

    • Resistance committees appreciate the international support, and that if the international community wishes to support Sudan, it should do so by supporting the Sudanese people.

  • The morning after Burhan's announcement of a newly formed Sovereign Council, rejections are pouring in, including Malik Agar, Elhadi Idris, and Hunud Abia, who was announced to replace Hamdok as Prime Minister.

  • But in an unexpected twist, former Sovereign Council member Raja Nicola was sworn in today to the newly formed #SudanCoup council, to the disappointment of many. The Sudanese Coptics Association released a statement denouncing Nicola, stating "she does not represent us”. Also joining the council are known Bashir loyalists/Islamists such as Salma Abdeljabar and Abuelgasim Burtum, who is reportedly one of the main figures behind the push to normalize with Israel.

  • Sudanese ambassador to the US Dr. Noureldin Satti released a statement encouraging people in Sudan and diaspora to come out in protest of military rule tomorrow, stressing the demands of the people as declared by the resistance committees.

  • Resistance committees across the country are gearing up for tomorrow's ‘millions march’, despite speculation that the military is planning to ramp up the violence. Over 45 diaspora protests planned tomorrow, beginning at 1pm local time - following protests in Sudan, a.k.a Revolutionary Standard Time.
