Day 22 of the Military Coup

Summary of Events

  • Sudan has completed its 22nd day without internet services as #SudanBlackout continues, despite the recent Khartoum district court ruling to restore internet services to the country.

  • The Darfur Lawyers Authority released report revealing that 71 people are still unlawfully detained by coup authorities across 3 states in Darfur, including 40 people in Nyala held in one room that is "badly ventilated". In Aldi'ein, East Darfur State, 6 of 14 detainees are COVID positive. It is unclear whether any of these detainees - many of whom reportedly suffer from chronic illness or are currently exhibiting symptoms of illness - are receiving medical care, although earlier reports indicate that they are not.

  • In Kassala, an emergency court sentenced 3 people to pay a 50,000 SDG fine (or 2 months in jail if unable to pay); their crime was protesting in the October 30 mass demonstrations. Six more are awaiting sentencing for the same conviction. This is not the first emergency trial of its kind during this period: 14 ppl were sentenced to 2 months jail in Nyala on October 29 for the same conviction.

  • Medical professionals came out today in silent protest at several hospitals around Khartoum, as well as Kassala Hospital, against the General Burhan-led military coup. This is significant considering several hospitals in Khartoum were attacked by coup forces during the mass demonstrations last weekend.

  • The Sudan Central Doctors Committee released updated death and casualty tolls for Khartoum; since October 25, a total of 23 people have been killed by military forces. The youngest martyr is a 13 year old girl who died yesterday of a sustained gunshot wound to the head. 215 total injuries are recorded, with over 100 being gunshot wounds; 11 casualties remainl in serious condition.
