Day 23 of the Military Coup

Summary of Events

  • Sudan has completed 23 days without internet access as the military continues to shut down mobile data, and crack down on home ADSL service.

  • In an interview with AlJazeera, newly appointed Coup council member Malik Agar justified his participation by claiming he believes in the power of negotiation and dialogue, and joined to prevent the "crumbling of the Sudanese State”. Agar also claimed all those detained by #SudanCoup forces - including PM Hamdok and his cabinet - would be released within the next 2 days. When asked if PM Hamdok was being considered to resume his position, he responded "we prefer if [he did]; the Sudanese people support him". Agar was also asked about Hamdok's position on the possibility of participating in the Coup council; his response was "Hamdok said he agrees with what the Sudanese streets decide" . Note: Sudanese streets as of now still do not want Hamdok to participate in Burhan's coup government.

  • In a statement to AlJazeera, Hunud Abia - previously appointed as PM by coup authorities and thought to have joined - clarified that he had rejected the offer.

  • Sudan Central Doctors Committee released updated stats on the loss of life since the beginning of #SudanCoup, reporting 24 people killed by the military forces (in Khartoum). The latest martyr died in the hospital as a result of his injuries (gunshot wound to the head). He was 28.

  • Journalists in Khartoum came out in silent protest today against the military coup and the targeting of journalists by military forces. Staff at Garri Power Station in Khartoum also came out in silent protest against military rule.

  • Resistance committees across the country prepare for tomorrow's #Nov17March. In Khartoum, activities range from neighborhood protests to mass demonstrations; while 20 cities and towns nationwide have also signaled their participation via respective resistance committees. Note: bc of the internet shutdown, many of these towns/cities' past activities have gone unreported.
