Day 26 of the Military Coup
Summary of Events
It has been 26 days since General Abdelfattah Al-Burhan took power by force in a military coup, arresting and detaining PM Hamdok and most of his cabinet. Burhan has also formed his own Sovereign Council, and announced that elections will be in 8 months.
While mobile data services - which were only restored yesterday - are still available, social media sites continue to be blocked by the military. Sudanese citizens have resorted to using VPN to access Twitter, FB, and Instagram. Apprehension is still in the air regarding the military's motives of returning internet service, which was cut off for 25 days.
As citizens get back online, more info about resistance activities and the effects of the coup on citizens across the country is surfacing. In Medani, 30 people remain in illegal detention since October 25. It is reported that hundreds of citizens, many of whom are minors, have been arrested since the beginning of the coup; some were released the same day of arrest.
Several cities across Sudan came out in protest following Friday Prayer, honoring those who were killed during #Nov17March and denouncing the violence inflicted on Sudanese citizens by military forces. The theme of Friday prayers across the country today was the Islamic rejection of the actions of the military. Among the cities out in protest today, besides Khartoum, were Sinnar, Damazin and Dongola.
For the second consecutive day, military forces carried out heavy, targeted attacks on the city of Bahri in Khartoum. This is after Bahri became the focus of military forces during the #Nov17march, resulting in 10 protesters killed in the city. Field reports indicated the use of teargas and live ammunition, as well as the dismantling of barricades and intimidation of citizens. The terrorization lasted well into the evening, prompting a callout for other parts of Khartoum to come out in protest to relieve pressure.
In response to escalating violence from coup forces, resistance committees across the nation have announced their own escalation of non-violent resistance activities. In the cities of Gedarif and Khashm Elgirba, announcements were made for #Nov21March - a mass demonstration in honor of the martyrs.
The Resistance Committees of Greater Omdurman have also released a detailed resistance schedule for the upcoming week:
SUN: #Nov21March
MON: surprise activities (TBD/TBA by respective resistance committees)
TUE: boycott of all telecom companies, individuals and countries that support General Al-Burhan and the military coup (including all of its actors)
WED: exposing violations committed by intelligence/security forces and protests calling for #Nov25March.
THU: #Nov25March honoring the martyrs.
