Day 31 of the Military Coup
Summary of Events
Reports that the 19 resistance committee members on emergency trial in ElObeid, North Kordofan for organizing protests against the military coup have been acquitted - a much needed sliver of good news in an otherwise muddled and worrisome situation.
Thousands of citizens fled their villages in the Jebel Moon locality of West Darfur State into eastern Chad as armed attacks were carried out on villages in the area. Radio Dabanga reports that 10 villages and IDP camps in the locality were burned to the ground. The attacks resulted in at least 10 people killed and 14 wounded, as well as thousands displaced. Radio Dabanga quotes analyst Eric Reeves, who said that Arab militiamen in North Darfur see the coup "as a license to resume attacks on non-Arab farmers without fear their crimes will be communicated”.
The Sudan Central Doctors Committee announced the death of 21 year old Eltayeb Bahr Nasser, who was shot twice in the head by coup forces on November 21. The total killed since Oct 25 is now up to 42.
In Sinnar, political detainees have entered a hunger strike in rejection of the military coup and in support of tomorrow's mass demonstrations. Hundreds nationwide remain detained, including political elite from PM Hamdok’s old cabinet, even after the signing of the political agreement between the reinstated Prime Minister and the military, which guarantees their release.
In his first interview with local television since signing the agreement, Prime Minister Hamdok reiterated his reasoning, citing the need to stop the bloodshed and safeguard the progress made during the first two years of the transitional period. Hamdok has reportedly also issued a directive to halt all firing and hiring in governmental institutions, and will be reviewing them in the coming period as he sets up the new transitional government.
Tomorrow, the country will come out in #Nov25March, the fifth nationwide mass demonstration since the beginning of the coup. There are reports that [Khartoum] police have been directed to disarm in preparation, and were only afforded the use of teargas. Tomorrow will tell.
