Day 33 of the Military Coup

Summary of Events

  • Despite mass release of detainees last night, 5 political figures remain in custody in Khartoum, including 2 members of the anti-corruption committee, as well as the Minister of Industry. Still no word on detainees in Nyala and Zalingei, many of whom have been detained in inhumane conditions since late October.

  • The Central Doctors Committee reports a total of 63 casualties during yesterday's mass demonstration in Khartoum, including 1 gunshot wound and 1 rubber bullet injury. 19 ppl sustained head injuries resulting from direct hits from teargas canisters; 1 young protester lost eye as a result. Khartoum police have a long history of shooting teargas canisters at protester bodies, especially when directives are given to practice restraint.

  • In an interview with AlJAzeera, #SudanCoup council vice-chair Himedti made bold statements about PM Hamdok's involvement in the coup, as well as who was responsible for death of protesters on November 17 (he failed to clarify who was responsible for the killings on the other days since October 25). Himedti claimed Hamdok knew about and approved of the military coup (which he called 'a rectification'). He also claimed PM Hamdok was taken into custody on October 25 "for his safety", citing an alleged attack on his home "by the angry wives of detained ministers." Himedti also claimed it was actually police who killed protesters on November 17, not RSF or military, and that coup leadership was "tricked" by a false police report mentioning 1 death that was disproved by the city morgue.

  • Meanwhile, resistance activities continued, including public forums in Port Sudan, post-prayer protests in Khartoum, and a silent protest in Karari in solidarity with the victims/survivors of the Jebel Moon massacre in West Darfur.
