Day 36 of the Military Coup

Summary of Events

  • The country is gearing up for tomorrow's sixth round of nationwide mass demonstrations (#Nov30March) rejecting military rule and the political agreement signed between the military and PM Hamdok.

  • Today, authorities released anti-corruption committee spokesperson Wajdi Salih, former Sovereignty Council member Mohamed Elfaki and Forces of Freedom and Change spokesperson Jaafar Hassan. No confirmation on whether activists and resistance committee members in Darfur have been released.

  • In a Radio Dabanga article today, journalist Fayez ElSileik revealed via interview that 15 out of his 32 days in detention were spent in solitary confinement. He was not beaten or questioned, and no charges were brought against him. ElSileik was only released after he and others went on hunger strike - in contrast to journalist Ali Farsab, who was not detained for long, but was verbally assaulted and severely beaten by coup forces (all while sustaining a gunshot wound during Nov 17 protest and without receiving care).

  • The Office of the Prime Minister’s official Twitter account posted quotes from the Hamdok's November 24 interview with Sudanese TV channel S24. He stated the country was "on a precipice", and insinuated that the agreement was to prevent Sudan from suffering “same fate of other countries in the region”. The posts communicated the importance of having "open hearts" during this period, to accept differing opinions and to avoid rigidity and lack of compromise. The PM was also quoted saying that democracy is learned through practice, and that all "forces" (RCs, agreement signees, etc.) needed to "create an environment that will no longer allow for any unlawful arrest or attack on protesters."
