Day 39 of the Military Coup

Summary of Events

  • A mass demonstration was held today in ElObeid, North Kordofan State, to express the city's rejection of the coup and military rule. This is just one of the resistance activities that took place today nationwide, which included silent protests and public forums.

  • Acts of terror by armed militia (janjaweed) continue in the Darfur region; after the mid-November attacks on Jebel Moon in West Darfur, armed attacks have been reported yesterday in the area of Amar Jadeed in South Darfur, resulting in 4 people killed. In response, residents of the Manwashi area came out in protest, blocking off the main road connecting Nyala, South Darfur to Elfashir in the north. #SudanCoup leadership, including Darfur regional leader Mini Arko Minawi, have not made any substantial moves to secure the situation in Darfur.

  • Darfur is not the only region affected by insecurity and government neglect; residents of the Abu Jibeiha area of South Kordofan continue to live in 'disastrous conditions' following tribal conflict in the region, and have yet to receive any support or attention from the government.

  • While a cabinet has yet to be announced by PM Hamdok, Burhan-appointed Chief of Justice released a directive today reinstating all judges previously removed by the anti-corruption (Bashir regime dismantling) committee. The directive also provides them with backpay for the entire period since they were dismissed until now.
