Day 40 of the Military Coup

Summary of Events

  • The Sudan Central Doctors Committee announced today the death of 53 year old Mohamed Elsheikh Idris. Idris was severely beaten by #SudanCoup forces during the November 17 mass demonstrations, sustaining a skull fracture and a brain hemorrhage as a result. Police later fired teargas into the home during the funeral.

  • Resistance activities continued across the country, including silent protests in Khartoum, and public forums in Abushok IDP camp in North Darfur, AlNuhud in West Kordofan, and Medani in Jezira State.

  • In an interview with AlArabiya, Burhan reaffirmed his position that their intention was to rectify the path of the transition, and that he has no interest in running for president once elections are held. He said a new political agreement is being drafted to be presented to political powers so-far not included in the November 21 agreement. Burhan asserted "we will keep on path of rectification; whenever the political forces unify themselves, we will stop to include them”. When asked about accountability and the killing of peaceful protesters by #SudanCoup forces since October 25, Burhan said: "all Sudanese people bear responsibility in this matter: those who called for protests, whoever led protests out of their nonviolent nature, as well as security forces." Burhan also said he believed most of the Sudanese people approve of the coup - especially "those who have suffered in the last period, economically and in terms of security". He claimed that along with PM Hamdok, they are working on achieving 4 main goals in the remainder of the transition:

    • ensuring security

    • achieving peace

    • fixing economy

    • elections

  • In the meantime, residents of the Manwashi area of North Darfur have entered their second day of a sit-in blocking the Nyala-Elfashir highway. The community is protesting for justice after 4 people were killed by armed militia on December 1.
