Day 47 of the Military Coup

Summary of Events

  • Two villages in Central Darfur have been the latest targets of armed militia attacks. This is at least the fourth violent attack on residents of the Darfur region since Monday alone.

  • In his address to UN Security Council, UNITAMS head Volker Perthes said #SudanCoup "exposed and deepened mistrust" between civilians and the military, and within the civilian component. The November 21 agreement between Burhan and Hamdok "has not led to a rebuilding of lost trust". UNITAMS has proposed to host an "inclusive dialogue, both to address unresolved issues in the transitional period, as well as broader constitutional questions". Perthes said #SudanCoup government will have to take steps to regain and rebuild trust with the Sudanese public.

  • Speaking about demonstrations, Perthes claimed "small groups [of protesters] who are using violence have recently appeared". This is most likely in reference to armed individuals who appeared during the December 6 mass demonstrations in Khartoum, which resistance committees identified as plants. his shows that the military’s tactics seem to be working - certainly on the international community, because the streets have long learned to see through this tactic since the Bashir regime. Perthes also mentioned concern about increasing insecurity in the Darfur, Blue Nile and the Kordofans. He urged the intl community to "take a balanced approach" by considering a quick resumption of funding "to ensure that the Sudanese people do not continue to bear the brunt of the political crisis."

  • The Alliance of Farmers of AlJazeera and AlManagil warn of an impending famine; this because the government has stopped financing the project "and has imposed exorbitant taxes, along with increase in price of production inputs."

  • Resistance activities continued across the country, with public forums in Sinja, Kassala and different areas of Khartoum. These resistance activities are working towards December 13, Sudan's 8th wave of nationwide mass demonstrations since the military coup on October 25.
