Day 56 of the Military Coup
Summary of Events
More than 20 cities and towns across Sudan came out today, on the third anniversary of the December Revolution, to protest #SudanCoup and demand an end to military rule. To illustrate (some towns not included):
Protesters in AlDamer, after protesting in their city, walked to Atbara to join #Dec19March activities there, which included in a one-day sit-in in the city. In Medani and ElObeid, sit-ins in front of state secretariat buildings were reportedly dispersed by #SudanCoup forces.
In Kassala, one protester was reported injured by a stun grenade fired by #SudanCoup forces to disperse protesters.
In the capital, protesters from all corners of the 3 cities made their way into Khartoum to protest in Central Khartoum. Thousands managed to congregate in front of the Presidential Palace, despite #SudanCoup forces blocking the bridges leading into Khartoum. Others in nearby areas of Central Khartoum were heavily teargassed; stun grenades were fired to prevent protesters reaching the palace. Many more were teargassed on the bridge as they made their way from Omdurman, preventing them from being able to cross over.
Around sunset, Khartoum Resistance Committees announced an open sit-in in front of Presidential Palace. #SudanCoup forces cut power in the area, and then attacked peaceful protesters, reportedly firing teargas, stun grenades and rubber bullets to disperse protesters. There are reports that live ammunition was also fired.
As protesters tried to vacate the premises, they were reportedly beaten, arrested and robbed by #SudanCoup forces. Similar reports came from protesters on various bridges trying to make their way home. There are also several reports that authorities were also shaving protesters heads.
Preliminary reports from activists say 1 killed and around 300 injured in attacks by #SudanCoup forces in Khartoum today. Activists also report 2 protesters raped by #SudanCoup forces; several others suffered other forms of sexual assault.
Total number of arrested still unconfirmed.
Awaiting the full report by the Sudan Doctors Committee.
