Day 63 of the Military Coup

Summary of Events

  • Sudan Doctors Committee: 235 confirmed injured (so far) in yesterday’s mass demonstrations, including direct hits with teargas canisters and stun grenades, and 6 gunshot wounds, 3 of which are in unstable condition (1 in ICU).

  • General Burhan has issued emergency directive giving intelligence services wider powers to indiscriminately arrest, seize funds and property, and break up meetings and gatherings. This, as many pointed out, is a return to Bashir-era counterintelligence state.

  • In response, silent protests broke out in some areas of Khartoum, amidst continued wave of arrests targeting activists and resistance committee members. This evening, a Karari RC member was arrested by unidentified agents while broadcasting on FB live. He was later released and taken to hospital because of the severe beating he endured while in detention.

  • In a press conference today, lawyers discussed different violations committed by #SudanCoup authorities against citizens since October 25. These included obstruction of due process, such as stalling the release of detainees and preventing lawyers from entering police station. Lawyers also reported on the detention of children, including 4 minors in Bahri who were held for almost 12 days, which goes against the Child Act of 2010.

  • Protests continued today, including in Atbara, where a silent protest was held denouncing state sexual violence, in response to news of the sexual assault of women during the Dec 19 protests in Khartoum. Calls continue for participation in #Dec30March.
