Day 72 of the Military Coup
Summary of Events
Mass demonstrations took place today (January 4) in the tri-city capital, Port Sudan and Nyala.
There was heavy presence of #SudanCoup forces in Khartoum, blocking off bridges and main roads, but telecom services were not disrupted today.
In Khartoum, protesters were attacked by #SudanCoup forces with teargas and stun grenades, including the use of a teargassing drone, reportedly used by Israeli forces against Palestinian protesters. Physical assault and robbery of protesters by authorities was also rampant. The Sudan Doctors Committee reported 70 injured in today's demonstrations in the capital.
In Port Sudan, protesters faced heavy crackdown by #SudanCoup forces, who physically assaulted and arrested protesters, and fired teargas and stun grenades on them. The Port Sudan Resistance Committees reported a total of 18 casualties, including fractured bones from severe beating by #SudanCoup forces. 11 protesters were arrested during today's demonstrations in the city, all of whom were subsequently released.
Today's protests, which were called for by Umbadda Resistance Committees in Omdurman, fall outside the preset schedule of 'millions marches' that was set by resistance committees at the end of December. (Jan 6, 12, 17, 24, 30) As such, Sudan is now gearing up for #Jan6March, the first official mass demonstration date in January's schedule, set by resistance committees at the end of Dec. Several resistance committees nationwide have already been holding neighborhood protests since late last week calling for participation.
