Day 81 of the Military Coup

Summary of Events

  • 14 [confirmed] cities came out in protest today, on the 13th round of nationwide demonstrations since the military took power on October 25.

  • The tri-city capital experienced terror by #SudanCoup forces today, who seem to have been embarrassed by yesterday's last min cancelation of demos. Authorities used teargas and stun grenades, rubber and live ammunition, as well as Dshk anti-aircraft guns on protesters.

  • In Central Khartoum, #SudanCoup forces surrounded protesters, at one point attempting to run them over with armored vehicles. In Bahri and Omdurman, authorities beat protesters with batons, stabbed them with knives and shot live ammunition at them.

  • Khartoum wasn't the only city to experience violence; in Medani, protesters were teargassed and shot at by #SudanCoup forces. Armed security agents in civilian clothing also infiltrated the AlMadaneen neighborhood of the city; they were spotted by protesters and escorted out.

  • The violence inflicted on protesters by #SudanCoup forces in Bahri led to the killing of Alrayah Mohamed, raising the death toll in Khartoum to 64.

  • Police reported the death of a high ranking officer, claiming he was stabbed by protesters in Central Khartoum. This despite the fact that because of the heavy crackdown, protesters in the area could not approach authorities. There is also doubt cast on their claim, as the officer's death was reported on several outlets earlier this morning, before protests even began. This is not the first time that protesters are falsely accused of harming authorities; as many activists and analysts pointed out, this is a long-used tactic that dates back to the revolution, aimed to discredit the nonviolent movement and paint protesters as violent.

  • After holding an open sit-in for the last 4 days that led to #SudanCoup authorities freezing decision to raise electricity prices, protesters in Northern State have announced today an escalation of their resistance activities. In addition to the blocked Egypt-Sudan highway, protesters have blocked the Merowe-Atbara highway, effectively closing access to Northern State. Merowe resistance committees are demanding citizens be given their share of revenue from mining operations in the area.
