Day 80 of the Military Coup
Summary of Events
In a surprise twist, Khartoum State resistance committees announced this morning the postponement of #Jan12March, Sudan's 13th wave of nationwide demonstrations rejecting military rule since October 25. This after #SudanCoup forces had already prepared by closing off bridges and main roads (including using shipping containers). Soon after, resistance committees of other major cities followed suit, postponing their own demonstrations until tomorrow.
In cities like Port Sudan, Elfashir, Atbara, AlDamer and Bara, protests continued as scheduled. Some cities that came out today also plan to come out tomorrow for #Jan13March, along with Khartoum State.
The sudden postponement of demonstrations in the capital served as a clever, "high impact/low death rate" disruption tactic. To quote analyst Kholood Khair, "closure of roads+bridges puts extra pressure on generals from business community, whom they can't fall foul of for too long."
After 4 days of open sit-in blocking the Sudan-Egypt highway in protest against increase in electricity fees, farmers in Northern State have come out victorious: #SudanCoup authorities have announced a freeze on the decision to raise tariffs.
