Day 83 of the Military Coup
Summary of Evens
17 year old Mohamed Adam (Tupac) and several others were arrested by #SudanCoup agents today as they left Royal Care Hospital in Khartoum, where Adam was getting treatment for 2 gunshot wounds to his leg. The arrest was made in an abduction style by agents in civilian clothes and unmarked vehicles. Later, it was reported that Mohamed Adam was under arrest for the murder of the police brigadier who was allegedly killed during demos in Khartoum on January 13.
Adam's arrest comes after police had already reported yesterday that they had suspects in custody for the murder. The 17 year old's abduction is part of a wider arrest campaign in Khartoum today, targeting Ghadiboon (a revolutionary group) and resistance committee members.
Similar arrests also took place today in the city of Atbara, also targeting members of the resistance.
In response to the arrests, resistance committees of Khartoum State and at least 8 other cities across Sudan released a joint statement denouncing the arrests. The joint statement is significant for 2 main reasons:
It is perhaps the first to include resistance committees from across the country.
It is a collective stand against the vilification of groups like Ghadiboon, who are often dismissed/considered outcasts or troublemakers.
Activists and citizens online (using the hashtag #كلنا_غاضبون) expressed importance of 'not making the mistake of Colombia' - a sector of the 2019 Khartoum sit-in that was dispersed using lethal force by security forces at the time. In the aftermath, public narrative was spun to paint occupants of Colombia as dispensable and deserving of their massacre, using many of the same 'reasons' with which groups like Ghadiboon (and, at one point, even resistance committees) are vilified today.
Many also likened the false accusation of Mohamed Adam for the murder of the police brigadier to the 2019 (false) accusation of a group of Darfuri students of stashing weapons and inciting violence. The same tactics, employed by the same people, 3 years apart.
#SudanCoup authorities closed down the Aljazeera Mubasher offices in Khartoum today, stripping their local correspondent Mohamed Omer of his press certification. In the directive, authorities claim the news outlet "allowed profanities" and posed a threat to national security. The channel has been consistently broadcasting live footage of the demonstrations in Khartoum.
In a bold move, the Coordinating Body of Sennar Resistance Committees submitted a memo to the Executive Director of Sennar Locality instructing them to vacate the state parliament & prepare it for a new revolutionary parliament, set to take over one week from today.
