Day 43 of the Military Coup

Summary of Events

  • A seventh wave of mass demonstrations took place today nationwide, covering at least 19 cities, as well as the tri-city capital of Khartoum (#Dec16March). Protesters (still) demand the fall of #SudanCoup Council and military rule.

  • December 6 is a significant date in Sudan's resistance history:

    • It is the date of the first protest of 2018/2019 revolution, which took place in Mayerno, Sennar State

    • It marks the anniversary of the murder of Altayya Abuagla, known as first female martyr of Bashir regime, killed at a protest in Khartoum University in 1989.

  • Besides a rejection of #SudanCoup, protests across the country also highlighted many other issues, including:

    • Justice for terrorized citizens in West and South Darfur

    • Honoring the martyrs of the revolution (by carrying white flags)

    • Honoring people w/disabilities (by carrying purple flags).

  • In addition to protests, one-day sit-ins also took place in many cities, including 3 sit-ins in Khartoum (Bahri, Alkalala and Alma'moura). The sit-ins included awareness speeches and performance art pieces about the current situation, harkening back to 2019 Khartoum sit-in.

  • Protesters in Central Khartoum made their way to the Presidential Palace; #SudanCoup forces retaliated with heavy teargas and stun grenades. According to activists, one protester was injured, sustaining a fractured skull as a result of a direct hit to the head from a teargas canister.

  • In a strange twist, protesters on Sitteen St. apprehended several individuals carrying small weapons (bricks/knives) trying to attack protesters. Activists believe they were plants sent to disrupt the nonviolent nature of the protests, and confirm #SudanCoup leadership's claims that protesters are violent.

  • Suspiciously, a police station in Bahri was set on fire; and police claimed it was the work of protesters. But eye witnesses say they saw police completely evacuate the station before the fire was started. Resistance Committees of AlSafya, Bahri (where the police station is located) released a statement confirming eyewitness statements, and denying involvement of any protesters in the incident, questioning why the police would evacuate from the station.

  • Into the late afternoon, #SudanCoup forces began attacking different parts of Bahri, invading neighborhoods and firing teargas into homes. By evening, they were shooting teargas into stores, and closing the rollup metal doors, trapping owners inside to suffocate.

  • In Gedarif, at least 12 protesters and activists were arrested by #SudanCoup forces at a public forum following protests in the city.

  • In Sennar State, protesters made the 13km trip from Sennar to Mayerno. In a radical act, "the People's Power Charter" was signed in Mayerno for the formation of a legislative council representing resistance committees, unions and local councils "to ensure power remains w/the people during the transitional period".

  • In Halfa Aljadeeda in Kassala State, Halfa Sugar Factory Resistance Committees held a public forum to discuss the current situation - their participation in today's #Dec6March.

  • Armed militia, which attacked the Kireinik area of West Darfur on Sunday, have left 48 killed and a large number of injured. Residents of the area are accusing the RSF of not only transporting the attackers to the Kireinik border, but also participating in the attack.

  • In Atbara, while #Dec6March was taking place in the city, the trial of the murder of Tarig Ahmed, an engineer killed by Bashir forces (now #SudanCoup forces) in December 2018 was underway. The main witness testimony was heard, and the family is reportedly hopeful that justice will be served.

  • Today's resistance activities are just further proof that:

    • Regardless of what #SudanCoup leadership claims, Sudanese continue to reject the political agreement and will no longer accept a scenario where the military is involved in political matters/governance.

    • With attacks on protesters and unlawful detention continuing, as well as insecurity in South Kordofan, South and West Darfur, it is clear that #SudanCoup government has failed to follow through on every promise it has made, and has yet to achieve anything it claimed it took power to accomplish.

    • Hamdok's presence in a government that does not represent the people - and systematically murders them - means absolutely nothing.
