Day 45 of the Military Coup
Summary of Events
An attack on residents of Donki Shatta, a town northwest of Elfashir, has left 4 people injured. This is the second attack in North Darfur since Monday, when 5 were killed near Zamzam IDP camp.
In continuing violence in the Darfur region, resistance committees of AlGineina in West Darfur report 8 killed in Marhaaka. According to Radio Dabanga, #SudanCoup leaders have announced the formation of a joint military taskforce "to contain the situation in Darfur." The governor of the Darfur region Arko Minawi claimed "certain groups who do not want the region's stability" being behind the violence in North Darfur. An alarming fact: UNOCHA reports that by 2022, half of Darfur's population - 6.2 million people - will need humanitarian assistance.
Resistance Committees of AlNuhud, West Kordofan reported that almost 1000 people have been displaced as the result of tribal conflict in the area, many of whom are children under the age of 18. Aid is sorely needed to support the displaced.
In a funny twist, Burhan publicly accused diplomatic missions in Sudan of inciting citizens against the military and "meddling in the nation's affairs". This is ironic considering the international community’s displayed fervor in congratulating Burhan and Hamdok for signing a political agreement, and their continued work to persuade the streets to accept it.
Since November, Sudan has been cut off from $650 million of international funding, according to (ex?) Minister of Finance Jibril Ibrahim. According to Reuters, the US "has put on hold $700 million in economic assistance", and the World Bank has paused $2 billion in disbursements since the coup.
In the meantime, resistance activities such as protests and public forums continue across the country. In Khartoum, journalists staged a protest today in solidarity with radio station Hala FM, which has been shut down by #SudanCoup leadership since Oct 25. Silent protests also took place to denounce the violence in the Darfur region, and to reject military rule. In Medani, a silent protest was held in honor of those killed by government forces since the December Revolution.
