Day 76 of the Military Coup

Summary of Events

  • Today, UNITAMS head Volker Perthes launched an "inclusive intra-Sudanese political process to support Sudanese stakeholders to agree on way out of current political crisis and path forward towards democracy and peace."

  • This new mediation is happening, once again, in complete disregard of the Sudanese people's clear, consistent and unequivocal rejection of any negotiation with #SudanCoup leadership, and of any scenario in which the military is involved in politics. In response, the Sudan Liberation Movement, led by Abdelwahid Nur, has rejected the invitation to the UN-mediated dialogue with #SudanCoup leadership.

  • Editor's note: after the violence, repression and literal war crimes committed by the military on peaceful, unarmed protesters and citizens at large over the last 75 days since #SudanCoup began, it is not only insulting, but also cruel to propose/impose these unwanted negotiations.

  • Meanwhile, the 'political process' has found support from both Saudi and Qatari governments, who released statements praising the move. This after the Saudi-Sudanese Business Council's statement yesterday that Gulf investors are considering withdrawing from Sudan.

  • While the international community pushes another negotiation, #SudanCoup forces continue to practice home raids, illegal arrests and intimidation of citizens. In AlDalanj, S. Kordofan earlier today, a resistance committee meeting was raided by authorities; several members were arrested. This evening, Halfaya resistance committees in Khartoum reported one of their members arrested from his home.

  • But resistance continues: mass demonstrations against #SudanCoup are planned for tomorrow, called for by Omdurman resistance committees. Several resistance committees nationwide have also responded to the call.

  • A reminder that 76 days into #SudanCoup, the military has yet to form a government, or fix any of the issues they snatched power to fix. The Ministry of Finance announced today it can no longer pay for operations of government departments, and only has the budget for public sector salaries.
