Day 77 of the Military Coup

Summary of Events

  • The Sudan Doctors Committee reported the passing of 17 year old Aladdin Adil, who died today after being shot in the neck by #SudanCoup forces during mass demonstrations in the capital on January 6.

  • Called for by Omdurman resistance committees, demos took place in at least 9 cities today against #SudanCoup, including an all-doctors demo in Khartoum. Bridges and main roads in the capital were blocked by authorities to prevent Bahri and Omdurman protesters from reaching presidential palace.

  • #SudanCoup forces attacked protesters using live ammunition, rubber bullets, teargas, teargas drones, stun grenades and water cannons. In Medani, demonstrations were dispersed with teargas; authorities raided the Madaneen neighborhood of the city. One protester was reportedly injured, but is now in good condition.

  • The Kosti demonstration was also reportedly violently dispersed by authorities.

  • In Central Khartoum and Bahri, protesters were violently dispersed, including attempts by authorities to run over protesters with armored vehicles.

  • The violence #SudanCoup forces continued to inflict today led to the death of 26 year old Ali Hubeldin Ali, shot in the neck by authorities with a teargas canister. Later, his funeral procession was teargassed by authorities. This raises the death toll in Khartoum to 62.

  • In Northern State, protesters blocked the main highway leading into Egypt (called the North Artery) after the Ministry of Finance raised electricity tariffs, particularly for agricultural projects.

  • While the international community continues to place trust in the military (and pressure the Sudanese people to make major concessions), the military continues to prove its lack of good faith, its unwillingness to practice rule of law, and its ineptitude to rule the country.
