Day 78 of the Military Coup
Summary of Events
A total of 96 people were injured in yesterday's demonstrations in Khartoum, according to the Sudan Doctors Committee, including one gunshot injury and 9 direct hits with teargas canisters.
The Sudan Doctors Committee also reported the death of 16 year old Almasoum Hashim, who was shot by #SudanCoup forces during the January 6 demonstrations in Khartoum. This raises total death toll in Khartoum since October 25 to 63.
In response to the news, high school students in Bahri came out in protest, making their way to the late Almasoum's home for the funeral.
In Omdurman, a 'Rasta March' was held in honor of martyrs Mohamed Majid [Bebo] and Abdalla Abbas [Alroosi].
Resistance activities continued in Aldabba Locality today, where the highway leading into Egypt is still blocked by residents in protest against Ministry of Finance's latest hike in electricity tariffs. Farmers gave the locality 72 hours to cancel the tariff increase.
Insecurity remains an issue in Darfur: a total of 12 people were injured yesterday in both West and North Darfur, the result of armed militia attacks. In Elfashir, armed militia attacked UNAMID headquarters, this time to steal vehicles, getting in a shootout with HQ security. A reminder that the city of Elfashir is still under a 6pm curfew, and the #SudanCoup joint task force is based in Elfashir.
According to UNITMAS head Volker Perthes, the UN has begun consultations with political groups as part of their 'political process' launched yesterday. Many on the street consider these new talks just another way to legitimize the coup and its leaders, and resistance committees have reiterated their position: no negotiation, no partnership, no legitimacy.
