Day 85 of the Military Coup
Summary of Events
At least 17 cities came out in protest on a 14th round of nationwide mass demonstrations since the military took over on October 25.
#SudanCoup forces' brutality has claimed 71 lives to date, including 7 in Khartoum today alone. They forces used all methods of violence against peaceful, unarmed protesters: from direct shots of teargas canisters at heads and bodies, to the use of live ammunition and Dshk anti-aircraft guns. Authorities also continued their arrest, assault and robbery campaigns.
A full tally of casualties has yet to be completed, but activists and medics estimate it to be over 100 in Khartoum alone.
In Medani, at least 2 casualties identified: 1 protester with a gunshot wound to the neck, and his mother, who suffered a direct hit of a teargas canister to the head.
#SudanCoup forces were even more ruthless in their suppression of protests across the capital, emboldened by a defense council that has deemed peaceful, nonviolent protesters to be terrorists, making the announcement today that it vows to "clamp down on terrorism."
Protest goers were trapped for hours, hiding from roaming hoards of armed officers, tweeting for help and safe passage. #SudanCoup forces fired rounds of teargas and live ammunition outside a hospital, further terrorizing citizens and preventing injured protesters from getting care.
Tonight, Khartoum was a city unable to even lay its dead to rest safely, as #SudanCoup forces attacked a funeral procession, attempting to run mourners over with their trucks.
In response to the violence, international actors like the German Embassy in Khartoum urged "all stakeholders to [...] refrain from the use of excessive force", while UNITAMS called for authorities to "conduct credible investigations into such incidents."
A reminder that 71 people have been killed in the last 85 days -- all of whom died as a result of weapons (teargas, live ammunition, anti-aircraft ammunition) fired by authorities.
The country is enraged & has now begun calling for a nationwide civil disobedience campaign, across public and private sectors. So far, 40 unions and professional orgs have made the call for a general strike starting tomorrow until Thursday.
The Sudan Doctors Union has called for full and immediate withdrawal from all military/police-owned hospitals, and formation of strike committees nationwide.
Resistance Committees in Sennar, Atbara & across Khartoum have called for a lockdown of their cities.
