Day 88 of the Military Coup
Summary of Events
A new militia attack has claimed 5 lives and injured 4 in North Darfur. Hundreds came out in protest, including residents of Zamzam IDP camp, carrying the bodies of the 5 slain to the Governor's home in Elfashir. Protesters also blocked the Elfashir-Nyala highway in response, demanding justice and security in the region.
Their protest comes at the same time as demos in at least 6 other cities, called for by Khartoum resistance committees in honor of the #SudanCoup martyrs.
In Omdurman, protesters headed to the home of the late John Achuel Kuel to chant in honor of him and provide support to his family. Kuel was shot and killed by #SudanCoup forces last night.
In Elfashir and Port Sudan, medical professionals staged silent protests denouncing continued violations against citizens, as well as the routine attack on hospitals and medical staff.
More barricades were set up along the Sudan-Egypt highway, which remains closed.
Beyond protests (which were teargassed by authorities in Khartoum), #SudanCoup forces continued to employ terror and intimidation tactics on citizens in the capital. At least 2 schools were raided by authorities, who teargassed classrooms before beating students and teachers. In one high school in Burri, #SudanCoup forces held students at gunpoint and threatened to arrest them, reportedly for "antagonizing officers who were attempting to clear the barricades near the school."
This one day after a US delegation met with #SudanCoup leadership, underscoring the importance of forming a 'civilian-led' government and stopping the violence before resuming paused financial assistance. Perhaps motivated by the reported "firm tone" of the US delegation, Burhan announced this evening the formation of a "caretaker government" comprising many figures of the NCP era, confirming what Sudanese have been saying since Oct 25: #SudanCoup is a resurgence of the Bashir regime.
