Day 95 of the Military Coup
Summary of Events
As announced yesterday, a large demonstration took place in Khartoum today in honor of Thabit Moawia, killed in the neighborhood by #SudanCoup forces on January 24. The demonstration, which congregated in front of the martyr's home, was attacked by #SudanCoup forces, who fired teargas and live ammunition. This led to the killing of Hassan Mukhtar Alshafie, who was shot by authorities in the thigh while making his way home. He is the 78th citizen killed by #SudanCoup forces since the military took power on October 25.
Protests also took place in AlManagil, Kosti and Gedarif denouncing the violence of authorities and demanding civilian rule.
Young women at the Hajjar Dormitory in Omdurman have entered their second day of sit-in after the sexual assault of a resident. According to residents, an unidentified man entered the dorm with his own key, raped and robbed the student and threatened her. Residents also stated the dorm administration was aware of the incident, and tried to cover it up (did not involve authorities). Protesters are demanding the head of administration resign, as well as the formation of a residents' board to guarantee their rights. They also demand the dismantling of the Student Support Fund, the organization charged with supporting university students nationwide that has long been synonymous with corruption.
The attack at Hajjar Dormitory harkens back to the attack on several dorms at University of Khartoum in the early days of #SudanCoup, in which students were assaulted and robbed by uniformed forces.
It is also proof that women and girls remain targets, unprotected and uniquely vulnerable - in Sudan as a whole.
On Tuesday, 3 girls aged 6-9 were raped by armed men in Central Darfur; a relative of the victims said police "had made no effort" to arrest the men.
