Day 98 of the Military Coup

Summary of Events

  • At least 25 cities came out to participate in #Jan30March - Sudan's 16th round of nationwide mass demonstrations against military rule since Burhan staged a coup on October 25.

  • #SudanCoup forces in several cities attacked peaceful protesters to disperse the demonstrations, including Port Sudan, Kassala and Gedarif. Arrests were also reported in several cities, including AlDuweim, where 12 out of 17 high school students remain detained by authorities.

  • In Kassala, several protesters were arrested and charged under Article 77 (persistent offenders).

  • In Gedarif, #SudanCoup forces invaded one of the neighborhoods, chasing protesters and making a number of arrests. 8 protesters were injured in the city, according to resistance committees.

  • A similar attack on neighborhoods was reported in Damazin, causing residents of the city to escalate their resistance activities, burning barricades and continuing their protest into the evening.

  • In Khartoum, #SudanCoup forces attacked protesters with teargas, stun grenades, skunk water, rubber bullets and live ammunition. The violence of authorities led to the death of 27 year old Mohamed Yousif Ismail, killed by #SudanCoup forces at the demonstration in Central Khartoum. He is the 79th life lost at the hands of authorities.

  • Following in the footsteps of protesters in Northern State, Atbara Resistance Committeess announced the barricading of Atbara Bridge, which serves as a route linking Khartoum to Port Sudan. Protesters have also presented a list of 5 demands:

    • State’s share in the agricultural projects

    • Removal of cement companies from Atbara

    • Review/supervision of mining companies in the state

    • Review of state investment laws

    • Removal of Zadna (a military-owned flour company) from people’s land

  • Port Sudan also followed suit, blocking the route used by Egyptian trucks to further hinder trade. A reminder that the Northern Barricade is still intact, with blockades all along the Sudan-Egypt highway completely halting freight trucks from entering or leaving Sudan.
